President: Robert C. Barnes, PhD

Robert C. Barnes, Ph.D., is the President of the International Board of Directors for the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy the parent organization of Logotherapy institutes in 22 countries on 6 continents.  A Diplomate in Logotherapy, Dr. Barnes is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. For more than 20 years, he has been on the faculty of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where he is Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Development.

An abbreviated list of Dr. Barnes’ recent consulting responsibilities includes the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Chicago where he collaborated in research using Logotherapy as a psychiatric intervention with AIDS patients; the State Psicologo Clinico in Rio do Janeiro, Brazil, where Dr. Barnes assisted in research involving Logotherapy as a treatment modality with reactive depression; the Human Sciences Resources Council of the Republic of South Africa; the Department of Psychology of the University of Sydney, Australia, and Han Yang University in Seoul, Korea, in research using Logotherapy’s concept of self-transcendence and modification of attitudes with individuals facing unavoidable suffering; the University of Texas’ M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and Harvard University’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in researching the significance in using Logotherapy as a part of the psychiatric intervention in recovery following cancer diagnosis; and with numerous other departments of psychology and psychiatry at universities throughout the United States. Dr. Barnes was recently named an honorary member of the Italian Logotherapeutic Association in recognition of his distinguished, humanitarian services in the field of psychotherapy.

Ninety-two year old Viktor Frankl wrote before his death in 1997, “It comforts me to know that, at this time in my life, a significant part of my legacy is passed into the hands and entrusted to the leadership of Dr. Robert Barnes. He represents Logotherapy at its best."
